Solidarity

Caleb doesn’t often defy us, but he threw a first-class fit today over what we would eat for supper, so he was sent to time out. Almost as soon as he went to the “time out chair,” Phillip pulled up a chair next to him. He hates for anyone to sit in time out alone.

Love pats

Ellie and Phillip were sitting at the dinner table last night when Ellie reached over and patted Phillip on the back. Phillip immediately screamed, “Spank! Don’t Spank!” No, no, we assured him, that’s just a “love pat.” Phillip reached over and hit Ellie as hard as he could on the back and said “LOVE PAT!” [...]

Better than Les Mis

I should add to my last post that watching Phillip play is anything but boring. This afternoon we observed the full gamut of his imagination as he played with his plastic giraffe and elephant. He picked up the animals and pretended that the giraffe was “roaring” then set them down, screamed, and ran to the [...]

Completely morphed into boring old people

Our two older kids are staying in New Orleans for a few extra days with my parents. Phillip goes with the flow, so it really amounts to having a lot of alone time. What have Lannie and I done with the extra time alone? Did we go out to dinner? Go to a movie? Go [...]

Not quite that cold

It was cooler in Arkadelphia than the steamy Big Easy, but when we returned Wednesday night to find “-196″ on the Walgreens sign, we checked the temperature at home: 86 degrees.

Welcome to Cajun Country

We visited my parents in New Orleans this week for the first time since they moved last January. The live on the campus of NOBTS, and we enjoyed swimming in the pool, playing in the three campus parks and hanging out at the rec center. All of the activities almost made up for [...]

Re-reading the classics

I’m re-reading several classic novels (and reading a couple for the first time) in order to prepare for my 10th grade English class this fall. Sense and Sensibility and The Importance of Being Earnest are two of my favorites, and they are basically light and easy reading for me. I plan to begin [...]

Phillip’s Friends

Friends Originally uploaded by narrowcaster
Even though he has his moments of impending toddlerdrum, Phillip creates many precious moments for our family. Last night as I was rocking him at bedtime, he pointed at the couch and said, “Sit with friends.” Who could resist letting [...]

Terrible Twos?

When I picked Phillip up from daycare yesterday, I asked his teacher about his day. She replied, “I think he’s in the terrible twos.” You think?
Today when I came inside from taking out the trash, Phillip patted his bottom and said, “Daddy spank.” Very accusatory, like I’ll show you Daddy. I’ll [...]

The downside of wearing flip-flops is that Mom can see your toes

“When we get home you need to ask Daddy to help you find the toenail clippers.”
“I found them last night. I already cut my toenails.”
“Caleb! Look at your big toe!”
“I like it like that.”
