I’ve come a long way, baby
My husband can convince me to do almost anything, given enough time. He even has a way of making it seem like it was my idea. We were watching “Heroes” last week, and he thought the ability to get into someone else’s thoughts and plant ideas in their mind was a cool superpower to have. Now that’s scary.
The latest “idea” that has been floating around our house lately has involved homeschooling our kids when we move.
Homeschooling has been a hot-button issue for us for many years. Lannie’s mom was a big proponent of homeschooling, and his brother and sister-in-law homeschool their oldest daughter. As a public school teacher, I hear all kinds of stories from people who hate to see money leave the school district when people living in the district decide to homeschool.
Personally, I’ve always been terrified of it. I have a severe math phobia, and I’ve always been afraid I would pass that on to my kids if I tried to teach them any math or science. I guess I thought that if I homeschooled my children, they would turn out to be prolific writers who couldn’t balance a checkbook.
However, for sheer practicality, I’m almost convinced that this is the way to go when we move to Memphis. We will likely be in an executive apartment for a few months, then we might be in a rental house before we actually buy a house or settle into a neighborhood. The way school districts are drawn in Memphis, that could mean moving in and out of 3 districts in the next 6-8 months. I can certainly see how homeschooling would keep the kids from being jerked around from school to school.
We even found a curriculum that makes it idiot-proof for me to teach them math. They’re actually way ahead in math, so hopefully I won’t handicap them for life if I try to teach it to them for one semester.
