Clean Sweep
We moved out of our house today and into an apartment. In preparation for our move, we threw away more things than we packed.
It’s unbelievable how much trash we collected over the course of seven years in our home. I overheard a much younger, newly married, also moving friend say that he and his wife had thrown away five trash bags full of stuff in their move. I laughed. Amateurs.
I think I threw away five bags full of McDonald’s happy meal toys alone. Based on the fact that we went through a 40-bag box as well as a 30-bag roll of trash bags, I estimated that we threw away almost 70 bags of trash. I felt like a contestant on the old TLC show, Clean Sweep, without the garage sale or the professionally designed room. On the other hand, I didn’t have to show my trashy house on television, either.
I wish that I’d taken a picture of the pile of trashbags just before the sanitation department picked them up. I don’t think the sanitation workers were too angry with us, though, because one of them asked if he could take home the turtle sandbox and the Kangaroo Climber that we’d left on the curb. We were glad to let him do whatever he wanted with them as long as he was willing to take them away.
At one point, I had suggested a garage sale, but Lannie commented that he would feel bad about charging people to take away our old stuff. He said he’d be willing to pay them to haul it away. This probably explains why garage sales would not be profitable for us.
