Good of a reason as any

Phillip has been learning the answer to the question “Why?” often begins with “Because…” Only he hasn’t exactly figured out how to complete his answer so that the rest of us can understand him. He began several weeks ago saying “Caaauuusee…” (he drags it out, thinking what to say next). His first few attempts went something like this:

Daddy: “Why are you playing with my keys?”
Phillip: “Caaaauuussee, I’m not the boss!”

Interestingly enough, he always answers with a true statement, albeit not the truth we were looking for.

Another recent habit is one he picked up from Lannie, who uses the excuse, “I’ve got a bone in my leg” whenever he doesn’t want to get up and do something. Today he combined the excuse with the response to “Why?” not once but twice.

The first time he did it, it almost made sense.

Phillip: “I want to go home now (on our bike ride).”
Me: “Why do you want to go home?”
Phillip: “Caaauuusse, I got a bone in my leg.”

The second time he changed the answer so that it in no way made any sense at all.

Phillip: “Caleb wants to talk to you.”
Me: “Why does Caleb want to talk to me?”
Phillip: “Caaauuusee, my leg, it has a bone, right here.”
