You can lead a child to the potty, but you can’t make him poop

We just spent 3 or 4 days potty training, and we’re exhausted! Phillip and I did a “potty training boot camp” last week, and he really is using the potty pretty consistently now. He even made it to church yesterday in underwear, and he didn’t have an accident.

We hit a little glitch, however, when it came to pooping in the potty. The boy went 3 whole days without pooping, until he finally couldn’t hold back any longer and went 3 times yesterday. I had heard the above saying before and thought it was funny, but it never felt as true as it did last week.

The funniest quote of the week came from Phillip on Saturday morning, when he told me (in all caps): “NOTHING YOU CAN DO CAN MAKE ME GO TO THE POTTY!!” About 30 seconds later, he decided (thankfully) to go on his own.

  1. Oh so glad to not have to go through that again…I really didn’t care for that stage of development! Though there can be many funny memories in those potty training days. One time E HAD to *go* with ALL his stuffed animals on the toilet with him. There he was at 2 years old holding about 5 or 6 animals on the toilet.
