Ellie and Phillip were sitting at the dinner table last night when Ellie reached over and patted Phillip on the back. Phillip immediately screamed, “Spank! Don’t Spank!” No, no, we assured him, that’s just a “love pat.” Phillip reached over and hit Ellie as hard as he could on the back and said “LOVE PAT!” No, no, Phillip, do it softer. Ellie gave him another love pat, and he screamed, “PAT SOFTER!” This can– and does– go on all night.

I should add to my last post that watching Phillip play is anything but boring. This afternoon we observed the full gamut of his imagination as he played with his plastic giraffe and elephant. He picked up the animals and pretended that the giraffe was “roaring” then set them down, screamed, and ran to the other side of the room. This startled us at first, because we thought he was screaming in fright. Then he calmly walked back to the giraffe, made it “roar” again, and ran screaming to the other side of the room. He turned back to the giraffe, stuck out his finger and said, “No, no, no, ‘raffe!” It was a thoroughly captivating theatre performance.
