Toddler translations

Do other toddlers have their own language? Some combination of English and whatever makes sense to them (and no one else)?
Each of my three children has developed some form of this, but none as complicated as Phillip. He’s developed his own code of speech that I like to call “Phillipese” (not to be [...]

Almost never

Having lived in the South all of my life, I sometimes get tired of people drawing sweeping stereotypes about Southerners.  Even people who used to live here can’t seem to stay away from self-deprecating humor.  Here Dooce, a former Southerner who now lives in Utah, makes fun of her hometown.  Um, I live in Bartlett, [...]

A boy and his stick

Phillip loves to carry a stick whenever he is outside. The first thing he does when we go to the park or even take a walk is find a stick. If we’re around a body of water, he will pretend it is his “fishy pole.” He is such a boy!

Elizabeth’s fashion rules

Elizabeth and I often have little “arguments” about what she is or is not going to wear, which I’m sure will only get worse as she gets older. I try to let her pick out her own clothes as much as possible, but I must admit sometimes I’m baffled by what she thinks “matches” [...]

New vocabulary word

Caleb and Elizabeth know very little about Catholicism, since we don’t really know any Catholics. But they’ve had a lot of questions from watching the coverage of the pope’s visit on the news.
Caleb seemed disinterested in it a few days ago until something the announcer said made him do a double take at the [...]

We sold our house!

We drove to Arkadelphia one last time on Thursday to close on our house. It was a weird feeling walking through it for the last time– a lot of relief mixed with a little sadness, thinking about how little the kids were when we moved in 7 years ago, bringing Phillip home from the [...]

Everyone is home!

My boys are home again. Phillip returned to me Thursday after being with my mom and dad for a week, and Lannie returned Friday after being in Knoxville for 3 days. Caleb, Elizabeth, and I were pretty bored without the other half of our family.
We met my parents in Little Rock on Thursday [...]

Missing Phillip

Phillip is spending the week with my mom and dad in New Orleans. He’s gone on a trip with them before, but he was only gone 4 days at the most. This is a long time to be away from my baby!
We’ve been trying to do a few things that we haven’t been [...]

I finally have my stuff back!

We moved out of our executive apartment and into a house last Tuesday, which happened to be my 33rd birthday. It was the weirdest birthday I’ve ever had, but Lannie was not at work so it was nice to have everyone together for the day.
We went to Arkadelphia last Monday to move all of [...]

Eight-year-old Angst

I promised Caleb I would link to his new web site, which he created on his own. His blog title, “Annoying,” which according to the title describes how he feels about his brother and sister, pretty much sums up his attitude these days.
